Overview

John Addis covers the bustling Jacksonville Beaches area. His story is a full-circle journey — from washing dishes at 15 to becoming a general manager and director of operations, then finding a new calling on the distribution side of the table. His experience offers DSRs a roadmap for growth built on curiosity, humility, and lifelong learning.

John shares how his mentors taught him to think beyond the recipe — to understand why ingredients, processes, and people matter — lessons that now shape his success helping operators thrive in today’s competitive environment.

From the Kitchen to the Street

John’s foundation was built in a scratch-made restaurant where everything — sauces, marinades, and teamwork — was crafted by hand. At 19, he became a kitchen manager, then rose to general manager and eventually director of operations for a multi-unit group. Along the way, he built strong relationships with distributors and learned how product quality, consistency, and supply reliability can make or break an operator’s business.

“I loved cooking, but I also loved leading people. Moving to Sysco gave me a chance to keep learning — from customers, brokers, and the entire supply chain.”

Market Intelligence: Be the Expert

John believes a great DSR knows the story behind every product and price tag. He checks FoodMarket.com (powered by Urner Barry) daily to stay ahead of commodity trends — from avian flu impacts to retail menu shifts that can ripple through the market.

He calls pricing the “ugly word” of the business, but one that’s easier to navigate when you understand it:

“If prices go up, you should know why. Our customers depend on us to know what’s driving the market.”

John’s takeaway for DSRs: own your education. Study supply chains, visit plants, ask brokers questions, and always bring context to your customers before they ask.

Teaching Operators the “Why”

Independent operators rarely have the time or resources to research global market forces. That’s where DSRs add the most value — by turning knowledge into trust.

“Most operators are loyal to a brand but don’t know why. Our job is to help them understand what they’re buying — and what makes one product different from another.”

John’s curiosity extends beyond food — even learning about bourbon’s Bottled-in-Bond Act reminded him how early food regulation shaped today’s industry standards. His message to DSRs: the more you learn, the more valuable you become.

Relationship Selling: Be Easy to Do Business With

John sees foodservice sales as a people-first business. Operators buy from people they like, trust, and learn from. His approach blends creativity, empathy, and consistent follow-through.

“Everyone sells French fries. The difference is in the relationship. Bring value and ideas, and they’ll want to buy from you.”

He constantly looks for recipes, menu ideas, and new product concepts that might help his customers stand out — often collaborating with brokers to sample and execute those ideas.

Prospecting with Purpose

John’s prospecting strategy is grounded in research and respect:

  1. Do the homework. Study the restaurant’s website, story, and menu for clues about their sourcing and standards.
  2. Eat the food. Visit as a genuine customer, not a salesperson. Build appreciation before you build an ask.
  3. Observe authority. Identify who truly runs the room — the person who commands respect — and introduce yourself naturally.
  4. Keep it simple. Leave a card, compliment the meal, and request a future meeting at their convenience.
  5. Don’t be pushy. Pressure leads to resentment; relationships built on respect last.

“Breaking bread with a customer is powerful. Don’t rush it — make it real.”

The Power of Showing Up

Both John and DSR Dave agree that success starts by walking in the door. In a world of emails and apps, face-to-face contact still drives trust. John teaches new reps not to drive past a potential customer — stop, shake a hand, make a call.

“You never know when you’ll walk in right after a bad delivery or when a competitor just lost their rep. That’s when opportunity strikes.”

DSR Dave adds his signature reminder:

“If you don’t make the call, you don’t have a shot. Walk in the door — that’s where sales happen.”

“Every great DSR started with curiosity — the hunger to learn something new every day. John Addis proves that success doesn’t come from chasing sales; it comes from serving your customers better than anyone else,” DSR Dave.
